[RSA Note: At this point , over 125 years into the chronology and with another 120 years to go, a detailed map of this area of Virginia and North Carolina would be a great help to this research. I have seen a few good maps of this area that would serve as the basis for one. A person with great patience and knowledge of the area would be able to chart the various creeks, branches, roads and swamps, giving us an idea of the changes in ownership and migration of the DUKE family - the rises and fall of the family wealth , prosperity and influence. Thus giving clues to the family’s interaction with notable families of the time, their movements and descendants.]

"Gates County N.C. Deeds" by Mona
The earliest DUKE name mentioned was a Gates Co. NC. deed dated 12 febuary 1799, in which John Shephers sold to William Shepard:
175 acres part of 2 patents: One granted to Thomas DUKE Jr. of Nansemond Co VA dated 28 Oct 1702. The other was a grant to Ruth Barefield dated Apr. 1694.
Begining at a Cypress on N side of Mills Swamp near mouth of Deep Branch.... down main run to mouth of James Brady’s mill swamp, and up run to N side of Bear Garden , to marked gum, by line of marked trees between said Brady & Shepherd, to Phillip Lewis’ line and along his line to Isaac Pipkin Sr.’s corner post oak and down dividing line between said Pipkin & Shepherd to Bear Garden and S.....
Now: 1702 was 26 years before the ‘dividing line between VA and NC -- so the tract had originally been within Virginia and had a Virginia land grant.
Now: 77 years later, we can see that the tract in NC had been in Virginia in 1702 --- prior to 1728 , and can hopefully give us an indication as to where the tracts were located.
First; Iwant to compare the 28 Oct 1702 grant to Thomas DUKE Jr. and 20 Apr 1694 grant to Ruth Barefield
Note the names SARUM ,SARAM SWAMP in the early VA deed.
Note the absence of these names in the Gates deed ,-- but we can see , MILLS SWAMP and BEAR GARDEN.
Then using the names offered in the deed of 12 Feb 1799 : John Shepherd 175 acs...William Shepherd...James Brady's Mill Swamp...Issac Pipkin, Sr...Phillip Lewis..Bear Garden...Thomas Duke, Sr. (1702)...Ruth Barefield (1694)
Can we find any other deeds attributed to any of these names that will give us other location names , or a grant with both names within?
As early as 24 Apr 1681 (21 years earlier) a Thomas DUKE was granted 430 arres in Up. Par. Nans. Neare Thomas Harrell adj. Thomas Parker -- the Cross Swamp & 200 acres belonging to William Wright -- & 200 acres granted to the said Wright 18 Mar. 1662 who conveyed to the said Duke. 230acres for transport of 5 persons: Tho. Duke, Tho. Duke, Fra Marr, Jno Deverett, Wm. Harring.
Question: Was this the first Thomas DUKE in Nansemond Co.?
Was his transfer of Tho DUKE , Tho DUKE -- himself and son ?
1681 Mention: CROSS SWAMP William WRIGHT
Prior to 28 Oct 1702 and one year after 23 Apr 1681 on 24 Apr 1682, a Thomas Duke (was it senior) was granted 350 acres in Up Par of Nasemond -- "at the Cross Swamp of Barbecue" -- transport of seven persons: Mary Croft, Sarah Stiles, Geo. Walker, Arthur Holder, Peter Blein, Thomas Pryer & negro Mathew.
Question: Was the Thomas DUKE --- father of Thomas DUKE Jr. in the 1702 grant ? Mention of ‘Cross Swamp of Barbecue’
Also we have:
Grant to Peter Febus 21 Oct. 1687 was for 200 acres Up Par Nans on Saram SW
Grant to Peter Phebus 20 Apr 1694 was for 250 acres Up Par Nans on Saram Maine Sw. adj. Richard Barefield
Peter Phebus mentioned in 28 Oct 1702 Grant to Thomas DUKE Jr.
A few months after Thomas DUKE Jr was granted 350 acres in Up. Par. Nans. (28 Oct 1702) - on 24 Apr 1703 - a John DUKE was granted 113 Acres Up. Par. of Nans. "on SW side of Cyprus SW, a br. of Summerton Cr. - adj. Thomas Allman’s land."
On 28 Oct 1702, Edmond Bayman was granted 4? acres Up Par Nans (the same day as Thomas Duke, Jr. grant) "on E side of S branch of Nans River" Beg. At Silvester Baker, being the dividing line bet. Robert Baker & Thomas Duke Senr. to land late in possession of James Gregory.
On 20 Oct. 1704, a Moses Hall was granted 95 acres Up Par Nans "near the Rich Thickett: adj. John Lassiter."
Old Quaker records that have survived tell us:
November 7th, 1707, Thomas DUKE Sr. gave consent for Moses Hall to marry his daughter Margaret DUKE.
(Later in 1727 "a" Thomas DUKE gave consent for William Bouge (of NC) to marry his daughter ‘Sarah’.
1795 JOSIAH DUKE (d Feb. 1802) married Priscilla Griffin (widow of James Griffin) DB 17- 1803 DB 19-154. (Halifax Lib.)
