[Several people have enquired about the extent of
my research. I am extracting this information from notebooks that
I have compiled over nearly 40 years of research. My Duke research
includes VA, SC, GA, some AL and FL. These postings are unordered
as one can tell because they come from random notes. Please realize
that I have probably made mistakes in transcription. I went to all
these county courthouses and transcribed these notes from the original
records by hand. I was always working on limited time so I very likely
left out some pertinent information. One needs to review the individual
record to verify what I have compiled. I hope that they can be of benefit
to a Duke researcher. -- Joe Lineberger

Speaking of old things, John E. Duke of Liberty Hill, has
a trunk 124 years old, brought from Ireland by his great grandfather and
grandmother in 1764. It is a box trunk, made of rawhide, bound with hoop
iron, the latter being painted alternately red and green, and retains the
same lock and key in [?] service. He also has a churn that is 47 years
old, of which from $60 to $70 worth of butter has been made every year.

OLD SOLDIER WRITES
Leesburg, Florida, March 12,1911. Editor, News Herald:
In your issue of March 6th in a statement of the death of my old
friend, James M. PATTERSON,...(I was) a member of the same company and
regiment in the cruel war... I notice you state that Dr. T. K. Mitchell
and M. E. Ewing were the only surviving members of his company. I am proud
to correct this serious mistake.
There are yet living (unless they have died inside of 15 months)
the following members of his company and regiment: Dr. Tandy Key MITCHELL,
M. E. EWING, I. N. BRAMLETT, James M. DEATON, R. H. DUNCAN, Hugh DUNCAN,
Capt. T. E. WINN, Josh PRUETT, S. P. BURNETT, William ROBINSON and me
(A. B. KILGORE) all of company F., 24th Georgia Regiment. The above were
all members of the
company when it left Gwinnett 28 April 1861. I think John M.
DUKE is also living, of Morgan county. Several others came to the
company as recruits dulater.

Mr. Robert L. Duke,

Dear Sir,
I have compiled quite a good record
of the Duke family which I hope some day to publish. If you have
family records or know anything of the history or tradition of the
family I should be grateful for any information and I should also
like to get a record of your own line of the family as far back as
you know it. There are a number of Duke families represented in
Georgia records, some being closely related and some seemingly not
related at all. However, I think there is a remote connection among
them all. I have a very extensive and interesting record and hope
you can add something to it for me.
Yours Truly,
Martha Reid Robinson
[Type-written Reply]
I would like very much to give you
desired information, but I am not much in remembering records such as
you care for. My father was born in Morgan County at Madison, Ga.,
being Samuel Milton Duke, son of Henry Duke, who came originally from
North Carolina. There were several brothers, several of whom resided
in South Georgia. There are also a good many Duke's in Alabama but I
do not know any of them. I would be pleased to have a copy of your
record of the Duke family. I have a half-brother in Florida who
could give you much information, but I do not know his address at
present.
Thanking you with all good wishes.

February 1823 he was at the house of Sabry Bradley, then Sabra Joyce,
at which time John James and William McLeland came up with the horse of
Sabra Bradley with a hog in a bag. Upon examination of the hog he
found it not to be the mark of Sabra Bradley. John James said it
was his mark that had been disfigured by the dogs, but Thomas Anderson
says it was the mark of John Duke and he had seen the hogs at Duke's
house. Daniel Bell, J.P.

Incidents of the Civil War as Recollected. Hezekiah "Ky" Roberts of Pavo, Georgia:
"Mose Reddick and Remer Dukes, who had been together for two years or
more, were separated, and when we got settled, Remer was not
there. Mose and I were in the deepest trouble we had been in
during the war. We knew where he was on the line and as soon as
it was light we went to look for him and we found his grave. A
pioneer corps had buried him during the night. We took him
up to higher ground on the hillside and buried him again. I cut
his name and regiment on a board, 'G. R. Dukes -- Co. C, 61st
Regiment', and placed it at the head of his grave, which was near a
very nice residence. I found some ladies and told them I had
buried a friend there and asked them if they would look after the
grave, which they promised they would do. Some time after the war
I read in the papers that some of the soldiers killed around Winchester
had been removed to the cemetery and on the headstone of one was the
name of 'G. R. Dukes -- Co. C, 61st Ga. Regiment'. No doubt there
are as good women in other states and sections as there are in
Virginia, but none better. Mose and I felt lonely after losing
Remer, he was a fine young man, a brother to E. T. Dukes of Quitman,
Georgia."

Edward Clinton Dukes and Nancy Hodges and the grandson of John Duke of

the Habius Corpus which has just been served upon him requiring him to
produce the body of George F. Duke, an infant child of Lavinah Duke
says that the child is at the house of this deponent about 15 miles
distant from this place--that he took and detains the child by virtue
of letters of guardianship which has been issued to him by the Court of
Ordinary of Tattnall County which are produced and a part of this
return, that the mother of the child has no home or visible means of
supporting the child, being poor, himself an infant and illegitimate
and she had already parted with the child which was left in the care
and custody of a person, who was of an unendorsed character, a female,
not calculated to raise the said child or do anything advantageous for
said child. These circumstances being made known to the Court of

has now the possession of the same where he will be well-treated.
