[Several people have enquired about the extent of my
research. I am extracting this information from notebooks that
I have compiled over nearly 40 years of research. My Duke research
includes VA, SC, GA, some AL and FL. These postings are unordered
as one can tell because they come from random notes. Please realize
that I have probably made mistakes in transcription. I went to all
these county courthouses and transcribed these notes from the original
records by hand. I was always working on limited time so I very likely
left out some pertinent information. One needs to review the individual
record to verify what I have compiled. I hope that they can be of benefit
to a Duke researcher. -- Joe Lineberger

[Just wanted to let Duke(s) researchers
know that there are two Duke collections of interest that a serious
researcher might want to look at. These are the Robinson Collection
located in the Georgia Archives in Atlanta, GA and the Curry Collection
located in the college library at Chapel Hill, NC.
Ms. Robinson was a genealogist from Coweta County in the early
part of the 20th Century. She accumulated a thick folder on Duke(s)
mainly in the central GA area. I have read through most of it but is quite
thick. Has data from interviews of people long deceased.
The Curry sisters were professional genealogists in the early
part of the 20th Century from Washington, DC. Did quite a bit of work
for people trying to prove their relationship to Washington Duke
of NC in order to inherit part of the tobacco fortune. Some Ga material.
Not as lengthy as the Robinson collection but interesting. I have read
through it. Joe ]

Jimmie Duke and his family being the first settlers. Mr. Duke bought
160 acres of land at the intersection of the O'Brien and Central Grove Roads
for a gun valued at $25.00. His son, Lumpkin Duke, was a prominent
man in the neighborhood and raised a large family, the boys of which
engaged in the sawmill business. Two of his sons, Lumpkin and Tom
Duke, are now living in Rome and are still engaged in the same kind
of work."

the town of Augusta from the British. "Those of the Americans whose
wounds would not allow them to be removed, were left in the town. Captain
Asby, with twenty-eight others, fell into the hands of the enemy. He

"...Taking a calculated risk, he [Col. Cruger] left his post
at Ninety-Six in the charge of militia Colonel Moses Kirkland, and on September
16 [1780] he put his regulars in motion for Augusta [GA]. At daybreak
of the 18th, Cruger's column...reached the banks of the river opposite
the MacKay House [White House]. As soon as their arrival was detected,
the rebels abandoned the seige and fled in rout order. They ' were so
precipitate in their flight', reported Cruger, 'that we had only a few chance
shot at them on the Wing'. By the time the head of the relief column crossed
the river, remnants of Brown's garrison had sallied out from the McKay
House and captured a number of rebel prisioners. One of these, Henry
Dukes of the Ceded Lands, was instantly hanged." Georgia Historical Quarterly,
