Fairfield District, SC, Probate Court, Estate Papers, Apt. 72, Package 18

John M. Hall applied for letters of administration on the estate of Samuel Duke on August 26, 1840.

Administrators were Hermon Coon and John M. Hall. The $15,000 bond was made by Hermon Coon, John M. Hall, Thomas Hall, and Elias Jamison.

The pool of appraisers were: Isaiah Crankfield, William E. Hall, David Montgommery, R. Crankfield, Jonathan Hall. The first four did the appraisal. The appraisal of the moveable property was returned October 6, 1840 in the amount of $5565.50. Names mentioned in the Appraisal were Harmon Coon, Elias Jamison, J. M. Hall, Haves Gladon, Sumers (man), Robert (boy), Hariet (woman), Prines (boy), Lenora (woman), Sharlot, Peter, Betty (old woman), Sary (old woman), Sabry (girl), Mariah (girl), Clabon (boy), Rachel (woman), Ciret, Carolina, John (boy), and Dembo (old man).

Buyers at the moveable estate sale, December 17, 1840: Isabela Duke, John Ricks, Joseph Alen, John M. Hall, Joseph Allen, Dan Pinhead?, Joel Dun, Wade Ward, Jesac? Cooper, N. H. Gladen, Levi ?. Sharp, E. H. Jemison, H. N. Gladen, Robert Walker, and Samuel Duke. Other names mentioned: Sumers (man), Prines (boy), Sarah (old woman), Mariah (girl), Betty (old woman), Dembo (old man), Hariet (old woman), John (boy), Sabra & Clabon, Lenora & 2 children (Sharlotte & Peter), Rachel and two children (Cirel & Carolene)and Robert (boy).

The package contains a citation for Litigation in Fairfield District Ordinary Court, dated October 3-13, 1843, between N. H. Gladden vs J. M. Hall and Harmon Moon the administrators where they were required to show their accounts for the Samuel Duke estate. Some names: Robert Miller, Eli Kennarly? (lawyers??). There were no details of the litigation.
