"South Carolina Fairfield County
Know all Men by these presents that we William Sorsby
and William Watson of the County and State aforesaid are held and firmly
bound unto Elizabeth Sorsby of the County and State aforesaid in the full
and Just Sum Two Thousand Dollars to be paid to the said Elizabeth Sorsby
her heirs Executors Administrators or Assigns to which payment will and
truly be made and done, we bind ourselves our heirs Executors Administrators
and Assigns firmly by these presents sealed with our Seals and dated this
eighteenth day of January in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred
and ninety-seven and in the twenty first Year of American Independence
-- Whereas William Sorsby and Elizabeth Sorsby his Wife both of the County
and State aforesaid have this day mutually agreed forever hereafter to
live Separate and apart from each other, in consideration whereof the above
named William Sorsby agrees that the said Elizabeth Sorsby should have
use occupy and enjoy without the hindrance or molestation of him the said
William Sorsby or of any other person or persons on his Account or by or
through his means or procurement, all the following property that is to
say Three Negroes Vis, Sylvia a Wench, Phillis a Girl, & Jerry a Boy,
one Feather Bed and Furniture, which she has now in her possession, also
one Feather Bed to be given and delivered in three months from this day
to my son Samuel Sorsby -- Now the Condition of the above obligation is
such that the above bound William Sorsby his heirs Executors or Administrators
shall and do well and truly permit the said Elizabeth Sorsby to have used
and enjoy, absolutely to herself her heirs Executors or Administrators
all the property above mentioned to her or their sole use benefit or Behoof
without the molestation or hindrance of him the said William Sorsby or
by or through the Claim of him the said William Sorsby or any other person
or persons claiming by from or under him or by Virtue of any claim or Demand
against him. And further if the said William Sorsby his heirs Executors
or Administrators shall and do at times hereafter for the better ??? to
the said Elizabeth Sorsby her heirs Executors or Administrators, all the
property above mentioned make such further assurances and conveyances of
the sam to the said Elizabeth Sorsby her heirs Executors or Administrators
as shall be reasonably required by her them or any of them, and shall not
any time here after claim or demand any of the property which she said
Elizabeth Sorsby may now have or shall hereafter by any means acquire but
to permit to her absolutely to enjoy and dispose of the same as full and
ample manner as if she were a fem Sole and not married -- (The Words, Together
with all other property that she had and received from her father William
Kirkland, being orared, and the words, obligation is is such that the above
being intertined before signed)
