Marvin to Tony---Fri, 12 Jun 1998 18:01:51 -0500
Amelia County, VA Will Book 2X, pg 311. Will of William Burge, undated, proved 15 Jan 1770. Executor William Crenshaw; Witnesses: Chas Irby, William Crenshaw, John Mills. To Richard Burge's son Burrell Burg [sic] half my land which contains 300 acres. And the other half to Thomas Burge's son Thomas Burg [sic]. All the rest of my estate after paying my debts to be equally divided between Burrell Burg [sic] and Tho Burg [sic], son to Tho Burg [sic] and Richard Burg [sic].
William Burge, the testator, was one of several sons of Thomas Burge of Bristol Parish, Prince George Co, VA. The Richard and Thomas Burge mentioned in the will were William's brothers. (This family, like most others of the period, named children after close relatives, so that the same given names are found frequently throughout the generations, very confusing to researchers.) The Richard in the will is NOT the Richard you find in SC. I'm told by another researcher that the SC Richard, who married Frances [?], is descended from another brother of Richard, William, and Thomas -- John Burge. So he would be a cousin of Burrell, not his brother.

For 20 years I have been satisfied that I had my direct line back to Thomas and Mary Burge.
I was sure that my 4th great grandfather, Richard Burge, who died in S.C. in 1798 was the son of John and Frances Burge, b 1728 in Bristol Parish. Everything seems to fit.
However, lately I have been wondering if I have missed something. The first Burge researcher I have ever talked to was Marvin Burge and that was this year. He is the only person that has ever given me any Burge information. All of my other information I had to dig for myself. He also told me about Carole Middleton's page. I went to the page and she has my Richard as the son of Richard and Constant. The only son that I found that was their son for sure was William. I wrote to her and asked her what source she got her information from. She answered and told me she would look into it but I havn't heard from her since.
Now I see that you have the same information and I would like to know where it came from because it makes a lot of sense because Richard, Burwell, and Jeremiah are always so close that it seems that they should be brothers not cousins. Because of this closeness I have wondered if Burwell and Jeremiah may even be the sons of Richard & Frances. It would be a lot easier if we could find the ages of Burwell and Jeremiah. They died around the same time as Richard. However, Burwell and Jeremiah both have young children and Richard only had one grown son on the 1790 census. Also it seems unlikely that Nancy, daughter of Burwell, would choose a cousin as her guardian.
We all know that Burwell Burge was the son of Richard Burge but which Richard?

You are right. Thomas and Mary had a son called Richard. This Richard Married Constant. However, there are no records that we have found that say that Richard and Constant ever had a son called Richard. On the contrary, John Burge, son of Thomas, and Mary had a son called Richard born 1728. This is in the Bristol Parish records. In these same Bristol Parish records the only record of children for Richard and Constant is a William.
Richard/Constant died Abt. 1760 and William his brother died Abt. 1770. It was about this time that William deeded property to Burrell Burge, son of a (Richard). Burrell would have had to be 21 at that time in order to receive that property.

I'm a little puzzled, also, about from where this idea came. I only show two sons of Richard and Constant: William, b Mar 1746 (Bristol Parish Register) and mentioned in his grandfather Thomas' will; and Burwell or Burrell. The latter is a little dicier to fit with Richard and Constant, but I think the circumstantial evidence justifies it. Burwell was the son of a Richard, per the William Burge will. He probably (though not certainly) was an adult when his uncle died in 1769-1770, giving him a birthdate of 1748 or earlier. So while it's possible that Burwell's father was the Richard, born to John and Francis Burge in 1729, this seems much less likely than the first hypothesis.
Of course, it's entirely possible that Richard and Constant had other children. Richard, unfortunately died intestate, so no will lists the heirs. Nor have I found them identified in the Amelia County court records of the period.
Nonetheless, I think that researchers listing a son Richard for Richard and Constant could help by offering citations.
